30th September 2004 Amelia Brown of Torre, Torquay was at her wits end with her wayward Jack Russell, Tristan. The 2 year old rescue dog had caused her problems from the day she adopted him over a year ago.
‘Tristan was a total nightmare to take out’ says Amelia. ‘He pulled so frantically that he spent most of the time on his two hind legs and to make things worse would squeal in his attempt to pull me forward faster. He could also be quite aggressive towards other dogs which could be quite embarrassing’.
Amelia being dragged down the street by her noisey hound became a familiar sight to many locals and passers by regularly commented it that it was clearly Tristan taking his owner for a walk rather than the other way round.
Tristan also misbehaved at home barking at anyone who passed by and also when left home alone.
Amelia had decided to get a dog following treatment for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, cancer of the lymphatic system. ‘I thought that having a dog would be good for me, in terms of both the exercise and the relaxing effect pets are meant to have on you. Tristan certainly didn’t help me relax and the exercise wasn’t quite what I had in mind’ she laughs.
Amelia tried following advice from dog training books and used various training aids, all to no avail. It was only when she contacted Bark Busters that her problems were finally solved.
Sandra Hughes, the Bark Buster Therapist in the Mid-Devon area soon helped Amelia to get Tristan back in line. As Sandra explains ‘I showed Amelia how to communicate with Tristan in a way that he understood and in doing so stopped him from pulling on the lead and also controlled his barking’.
‘The difference in Tristan is quite amazing’ says Amelia. ‘After just 3 weeks Tristan is like a different dog walking at my side on a loose lead and actually taking notice of my commands. People just can’t believe the difference in him. Friends have commented on the way Tristan now listens to me and even more surprisingly obeys me’ says Amelia. ‘Life with Tristan is now so much more relaxed and enjoyable and that is all thanks to Sandra’.
