I am Dave Jefferay your local dog and puppy behaviour therapist and trainer for Bark Busters Home Dog Training. I've always loved dogs and as I was growing up the family had a succession of dogs; the first one I regarded as being “mine” was Buster, a male Border Collie and German Shepherd cross. He was a wonderful dog who spent whole days with me and friends playing in the local woods during school holidays. After leaving home, my first dog was Cassie. She was a young rescue dog who adopted me when I went to a rescue centre. I was originally looking for an adult dog because I didn’t have time to train a puppy but she was too cute to resist. I took her to a couple of puppy training classes but I wasn’t keen on their methods so having researched online and in books I trained her myself and she turned out to be an amazing dog.

My wife and I now have Perra, a beautiful Spanish rescue girl who we believe is a German Shepherd cross Galgo (Spanish Greyhound hunting dog). So, she’s large, fast, powerful, and highly intelligent! She arrived when around 5/6 months old and is now four years old. On her arrival we had to start from scratch with her training, get her used to our cats and chickens, no chasing allowed, and although in the past I wasn't keen on using crates, she really loves hers. However, the cats in our house rule, take over her crate and she is far too polite to ask them to move! Her arrival prompted me to refresh my dog training knowledge online, TV and in books, but I found it had become very confusing with many contradicting ideas and methods and approaches. That’s when my research discovered Bark Busters.

I have found their methods so easy and natural to use, and as they are based on the way dogs naturally communicate with each other, it is easy for dog owners to follow, dogs to understand, trust, learn and respond happily and quickly. With a young toddler in my house I am currently training both our dog and our child the boundaries they need to understand, to avoid jealousy and basic safety; of course baby gates are great for when full supervision isn’t possible.

I am currently studying for the Advanced Diploma in Applied Animal Behaviour (Canine) whilst thoroughly enjoying my work with Bark Busters and the lovely clients and dogs I meet.

My biggest wish and the best reward I can have, is to help dogs and their owners enjoy each other, to prevent dogs being given up for rehoming (or, worse, euthanised) due to the behaviour being experienced.

Some of the issues I am asked to help are pulling/lunging on the lead, jumping up, nuisance barking, recall, sibling rivalry, aggression (to dogs, animals, or people) and with people returning to work, Separation Anxiety and the mess or destruction that it creates.
